Why the Old Paths to “Making It” in Hollywood Are Disappearing—And What to Do Instead
May 08, 2025
The industry is shifting—fast.
This week, I came across news that Coverfly, a once-popular platform for script coverage, contests, and connecting with reps, is shutting down its services. For many writers, this was one of the few accessible tools for getting eyes on their work.
But it’s not just Coverfly.
Across the board, traditional entry points are closing. Contests are fading. Actor showcases are dwindling. Opportunities to be “discovered” through the old-school pipeline are becoming rare. And if you’re an actor, writer, or director still waiting for someone to pick you—you might be waiting a long time.
So what does that mean for you as a creative?
It means the power is shifting.
It means the rules are changing.
And it means you need to build your own path forward.
Writers: It’s Time to Be Seen—Before the Script is Even Finished
It’s not just about your screenplay anymore. You need visibility. That could mean launching a blog, starting a podcast, or building a body of work that lives online. The goal is to create a space where your voice is heard and your perspective is felt—before the industry ever comes knocking.
Actors: Waiting for a Casting Call Won’t Cut It
The showcase route? It’s no longer reliable. If you’re an actor, it’s time to create your own footage. A short film. A self-produced scene. Even a vertical story for TikTok or Instagram. You need work that shows your range, tells your story, and gives casting directors something to see—not just imagine.
Directors: Your Proof Is Your Power
You don’t need a studio to greenlight you anymore. You need proof. Proof that you can execute, that you have a voice, and that you can lead a team to bring a vision to life. Whether it’s a micro-short, a vertical project, or a DIY pilot—your job is to show what you can do with the resources you have now.
What’s the Opportunity Here?
The gatekeepers haven’t disappeared, but the gates are lower—and there are more ways around them. Social media, content platforms, and direct-to-audience tools have leveled the playing field. You no longer need permission to build your brand or showcase your work.
Yes, it’s more work.
Yes, it requires strategy.
But it also means freedom.
This is the moment to stop waiting and start building.
Let go of the old model.
Embrace the new one.
And most importantly—take ownership of your creative career.
